Question: How do I view a movie?
Answer: All of the animations and films on this CD ROM are Quicktime (.mov), Audio Video Interleave (.avi) or Moving Picture Experts Group (.mpg) format. If you have the appropriate software on your computer that is linked to your browser as a "Helper Application", all movies should play automatically. If they do not, check first that you have a "Helper Application" for movies linked to your browser (how to do this varies from one browser to another). Two appropriate "Helper Applications" are described below. Note that many versions of Windows Media Player will not play these formats.

If you do not have the appropriate software on your computer to view these files, a good choice is VLC Media Player, which is available for free for just about any platform from VideoLAN. You can also download Quicktime for Mac or Windows 2000/XP, but be aware that the free version of Quicktime will play .mov and .avi files but not all .mpg formats.

Then, you can link VLC or Quicktime to your Browser as a "Helper Application". Alternatively, you can

  1. Right click (Windows) or Control click (Mac) the link to the animation or film, and select "Save Link As..."
  2. Save the movie in the location of your choice on your computer
  3. Start the VLC Media Player or Quicktime application
  4. Use File: Open to open the movie and play it.

Question: How do I find information on all of the station data files for the Storm of '03?

Question: How do I work with a comma delimited text file?
Answer: There are 3 options:

  1. The first option is to import the file into Microsoft Excel. Under the file menu, select open. This will open the text import wizard. For step 1, select 'delimited', then next. For step 2, select 'comma', then finish.
  2. The second option is for those students that are familiar with and have a computer with a fortran 77 compiler. Save this program to your computer to read the surface files or this program to read the upper air files. These FORTRAN programs read in the storm of '03 text files. Once your have saved the programs and data to your computer, just type 'f77 program_name.f' to compile the program. Add your own programming commands to the program to manipulate the data as you would like.
  3. The third option is to write your own program in the computer language of your choice to work with the data.
