Storm of '03: Select by Data Type

Help page for the surface text data

This is a help page for using the surface text data for the February 2003 storm case study. The information provided here describes the text data selected by data type.

Each text file has 6 columns and is comma delimited. Go to the 'How do I...?' page for tips on working with a comma delimited file. The first row of each file contains a label describing the data in each column.

The first column, labeled 'station' is the station where the data is from. It is identified by the state and the station's 3 letter identifier. The second column is latitude, labeled 'lat'. The third column is longitude, labeled 'lon'. Negative longitudes are in the western hemisphere. The fourth column is day. The fifth column is the time of the observation in UTC time, the column is labeled 'hour'. The sixth column is the data that is selected by type. The data types available are:

  • Dry bulb temperature in °Fahrenheit (labeled 'dry_temp')
  • Wet bulb temperature in °Fahrenheit (labeled 'wet_temp')
  • Dewpoint temperature in °Fahrenheit (labeled 'dewpoint')
  • Sky conditions (labeled 'sky_cond')
  • Visibility in statue miles (labeled 'vis')
  • Relative humidity in % (labeled 'rel_hum')
  • Wind speed in knots (labeled 'wind_spd')
  • Wind direction in degrees from true north (labeled 'wind_dir')
  • Wind gust in knots (labeled 'wind_gust')
  • Station pressure in inches of mercury (labeled 'stat_pres')
