Storm of '03: Select by Data Type

Help page for the upper air text data

This is a help page for using the upper air text data for the February 2003 storm case study. The information provided here describes the text data selected by data type.

There is a separate file for each data type at each of 5 pressure levels. Each text file has 8 columns and is comma delimited. Go to the 'How do I...?' page for tips on working with a comma delimited file. The first row of each file contains a label describing the data in each column.

The first column is the day of the observation. The second column, labeled 'hour' is the time of the observation in UTC time. The third column, labeled 'station' is the station where the data is from, identified by its 3 letter identifier. The fourth column is the wban number of the station, labeled 'wban_num'. The fifth column is latitude, labeled 'lat'. The sixth column is longitude, labeled 'lon'. The seventh column is the pressure level, in hPa, where the observations are taken, labeled 'pres_lev'. The eighth and last column is the data that is selected by type. The data types available are:

  • Temperature in °Celsius (labeled 'temp')
  • Dewpoint temperature in °Celsius (labeled 'dewpoint')
  • Height of the pressure level in meters (labeled 'height')
  • Wind direction in degrees (labeled 'wind_dir')
  • Wind speed in meters per second (labeled 'wind_spd')
Missing data is indicated either by '99999' or '9999.9'
