Storm of '03: Select by Date and Time

Help page for the upper air text data

This is a help page for using the upper air text data for the February 2003 storm case study. The information provided here describes the text data selected by day.

Each text file has 12 columns and is comma delimited. Go to the 'How do I...?' page for tips on working with a comma delimited file. The first row of each file contains a label describing the data in each column.

The following list describes the data in each column in the order the columns appear in the data file.

  1. The day of the observation (labeled 'day').
  2. The time of the observation in UTC (labeled 'hour').
  3. The station where the observation is taken (labeled 'station'), identified by the station's 3 letter identifier.
  4. The wban number of the station (labeled 'wban_num')
  5. The latitude of the station (labeled 'lat').
  6. The longitude of the station (labeled 'lon').
  7. The pressure level from which the observations are taken (labeled 'pres_lev')
  8. Height of the pressure level in meters (labeled 'height')
  9. Temperature in °Celsius (labeled 'temp')
  10. Dewpoint temperature in °Celsius (labeled 'dewpoint')
  11. Wind direction in degrees (labeled 'wind_dir')
  12. Wind speed in meters per second (labeled 'wind_spd')
