Student Deliverables for this course ...

FIRST DELIVERABLE: Prepare a proposal for a fellowship or scholarship.

Often it turns out that the title and abstract are the most important parts of the proposal as they are the gateway for the reader. Then the rest of the proposal will be looked upon with great scrutiny.

a. Research opportunities. How many fellowships are being offered? Where are the winners from? Can you find an example of a successful application for this specific application?
b. Reflect broadly about your topic. Why is it important? Who is impacted by your topic.
c. Form an outline.
d. Write a draft proposal.
e. Wait a day. Then critique your draft, and prepare a revision. Have you answered all questions? What are the most imporant questions to answer?
f. Have others read your proposal and provide critical analysis.

SECOND DELIVERABLE: Choose a to make a presentation of either style 1 or 2.

1. Deliver an interactive 50 minute discussion with your audience where you convey a topic, but also ask questions of the audience to keep them with you throughout. Your audience is actually a team of unpaid consultants that you can use for advice if you are willing to expose your weakest points to them, and request their help or advice in a subtle or overt way.
Provide me with a title and abstract for review, due 2 days before your presentation. After it is ok'd, you can deliver it to DAS, soliciting attendance. Provide me with an electronic copy of your presentation as well.

2. Prepare a professional prospectus including the following elements:

a. A brief biography indicating your previous training, education, and jobs if you would like, and what compelled you to join the ATMS program.

b. A brief professional biography of your advisor.

c. A description of your research topic as you envision it now including the following:

i. The title of your thesis or dissertation.

ii. A brief, SIMPLE description of your intended research topic so that we know what you are working on.

iii. Who is funding your research?

iv. Why is it an important problem?

v. What is the history of research in your area? Who else is working on similar topics at other laboratories? How will you make it unique?

d. What are your plans after graduation?

e. How are you preparing yourself to achieve your post graduation goals?

f. Identify any programatic missing elements you feel are lacking that might hinder your progress.

Deliver an oral presentation of your prospectus on the day of your assigned presentation.

SECOND DELIVERABLE: TBD.
